Siberian Pine – Сибирский кедр

Today during our break at class, our teacher brought out a pine cone from her stuff and asked us if we wanted to try it. I thought, “What… you can eat pine cones here?” Of course not, she was talking about the nuts inside the pine cone. A friend of hers had brought it back from Siberia. I had heard of pine nuts before, but I guess I had never thought about the nuts coming from pine cones.

the pine cone - home to pine nuts... now I know

When she handed the nut to Micah, he just tossed the whole thing in his mouth. Which was the wrong thing to do. He made quite an interesting face and said that he didn’t like it. But with further instructions, we figured out you need to open their shells first. Haha!

now it will taste better, Micah!

And maybe I have just never smelled a pine cone before, but this pine cone smelled great! Sorry that I can’t add smell here for you.

Violet wanted to get out there and dance too!

lunchtime!

Also on Saturday we went to a local outdoor market where you can get fresh fruit, vegetables & meat. The prices are cheaper than the grocery store and it’s a good opportunity to practice our Russian with the vendors.

fish anyone?

Girl fun

The other night Elisabeth & I had some fun together. We went to a new store that opened up nearby, it is kinda of like a very mini Wal-mart. They have clothes and shoes for the whole family, kitchen and bathroom supplies and other little knick knacky things. And the stuff there was actually decently priced for this area, Moscow is really expensive pretty much everywhere, so it was fun to find this store. It may not be the best of quality, but it works, for a while at least.

Since we were close to our apartment, she came over and we had some tea and cookies, watched a chick flick, and chatted for a bit. It was a fun night! Elisabeth is a sweet friend and I’m glad she is here with us.
